The Plan

The basic idea behind brunity is that the structure of the United States constitution allows for the addition of additional states. Great Britain consists of four kingdoms- England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland. Each kingdom could apply to become a state of the United States- with full representation in Congress, the Senate, and full voting rights for President.

Why do this?

As Brexit looms, Great Britain is likely to stand alone. While the details are still being negotiated, it seems clear that Great Britain will be isolated outside of Europe. The EU, while a nice idea, is clearly a dysfunctional system : lacking accountability and with no clear  democratic structure – essentially a bureaucrat’s dream. The United States by contrast, has a written constitution, a system of representation, as well as a semi-functional political system. By joining the United States, the kingdoms of Great Britain would lose autonomy, but be part of a new nation that represented the strong common culture of protecting personal freedoms. No need to negotiate free trade agreements as stand alone nation, increased trade across the atlantic and freedom of movement between peoples would benefit everyone. More importantly, the new United States would have 400 million people and be in a better position to advocate for its vision of democratic world where the free press and freedom of speech are taken seriously.

Why now?

Obviously, Brexit has demonstrated the tension between larger super states such as the EU and soveriegnty as a individual nation. However, its clear that global forces cannot be ignored. Already, Great Britain is feeling the strain of being isolated from Europe. However, there is a better choice than either rejoining the EU or agreeing to be under the yoke of EU bureaucrats. Join the strongest country in the world and make it stronger. Vote for the president of the strongest nation on earth and keep that nation strong.

Why bother?

You might think this is a farce. But, its not. China, an autocratic state that explicitly rejects ideas such as human rights, rule of law, democracy, and personal liberties is on the precipice of becoming the worlds most dominant economy and superpower. The United States alone does that have the people or might to stave off the inevitable dominance of a nation that is dedicated to undermining the achievement of centuries of progress in the area of human rights, rule of law, and personal freedoms. By banding together, the countries of the West can preserve the flame of personal freedom and keep the torch alight for longer.

Taking the “special relationship” to the next level

While there clearly are cultural, legal, and historical differences between Great Britain and the United States, these can be overcome. A common currency, issues related to health care systems and legal matters, can all be negotiated if there is good will on both side. The benefits of uniting these two great countries into one will pay dividends for centuries.
